Why Fall Is a Great Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs in Coastal North Carolina
When most people think about landscaping, spring’s usually the first season that comes to mind. But here in Wilmington and across Coastal North Carolina, fall can be one of the best times to add new trees and shrubs to your landscape.
Our long growing season, mild fall temperatures, and relatively warm soil give many plants a chance to start establishing their roots before the stress of next summer arrives. If you’ve been thinking about refreshing an older landscape, adding privacy, or bringing more color and structure to your yard, fall’s a great time to get started.
Cooler Weather Means Less Stress
Planting during the middle of summer can be tough on newly installed trees and shrubs. High temperatures increase water loss and put additional stress on plants while they are trying to adjust to a new location.
Fall brings cooler air temperatures while the soil can remain warm enough for root development. That combination allows the plant to focus more energy below the surface instead of trying to support a flush of new top growth. NC State Extension recommends late fall or early spring as favorable planting periods for many container-grown woody plants because they generally require less attention to watering and have time to begin establishing before temperature extremes arrive.
More Time to Establish Before Summer
Anyone who has spent a July afternoon in Wilmington knows how intense our summer heat can be.
Trees and shrubs planted in the fall have several months before they have to deal with those conditions. While growth above ground may slow as temperatures cool, roots can continue developing when soil conditions are favorable.
That head start can help plants become better established before hot, dry weather returns. NC State Extension also notes that, because North Carolina summers can be hot, fall planting works particularly well for many native plant species.
Fall Can Make Watering Easier
Every newly planted tree or shrub needs consistent moisture while it becomes established, no matter what time of year it goes into the ground.
The advantage of fall is that cooler temperatures generally reduce how quickly plants and soil lose moisture compared with the hottest parts of summer. Seasonal rainfall can also help reduce some of the irrigation demands associated with establishing new landscaping.
That doesn’t mean you can plant something and forget about it. New plants still need to be monitored and watered as needed, especially when Coastal North Carolina experiences stretches of dry weather.
Fall Is a Great Time to Rethink Your Landscape
After a full growing season, fall’s a great time to take a fresh look at your landscape and decide what is working and what could use some improvement.
Maybe a shrub has outgrown its space, an open area needs more privacy, or your yard could use more color, texture, and structure. Trees and shrubs can do much more than fill an empty spot. With the right placement, they can help create shade, frame your home, define landscape beds, add seasonal interest, and provide valuable habitat for birds and other wildlife.

The key is choosing the right plant for the right place. Sun exposure, drainage, available space, soil conditions, and the plant’s mature size all play an important role in long-term success. A shrub that performs well in one area of your yard may struggle in another if the growing conditions are different.
